Worcester, MA (July 1, 2011) - On Thursday, June 30, 2011 at approximately 7:00 PM Worcester Police responded to the area of 60 Providence Street for a report of gun shots. Information was provided by witnesses that a silver Buick with four males inside, three black males and one white male, had stopped outside of 60 Providence Street and shot several rounds from handguns. The car then sped off with all of the occupants inside. At the time of the shooting there were several people outside and around the area but there were no reports of anyone who had been hurt.
Officers at the scene were familiar with the vehicle which was described by witnesses as they observed it driving in the area just prior to the shots being reported. At this time multiple Operations units responded as well as a saturation of the Summer Impact vehicles. Responding police units were given the description of the suspect vehicle. Police were then able to secure a large perimeter around the Providence Street area and search for the four suspects.
At approximately 7:42 PM police received information that the suspect vehicle with three black males and one white male was on Arlington Street. The vehicle, a 2002 Buick Century was spotted on Heywood Street by Winthrop Street by Operations officers and a felony motor vehicle stop was initiated. At this time several police units responded and removed the four occupants of the vehicle. Members of the SWAT Team responded and searched the vehicle for anyone else that may have been hiding in the car as well as checking the trunk for additional occupants. The vehicle was cleared and turned over the members of the Detective Bureau. Detectives looked into the interior of the suspect vehicle through an open door and observed a loaded handgun protruding from the front passenger floor area. A sawed-off shotgun was located in the trunk when SWAT members were searching for additional occupants.
At this time, the occupants, Michael Gustafson, 20 years old of 18 Rena Street, Worcester, Eriah Nahnie, 19 years old of 66 Vernon Street, Worcester, Jahmala Nelson, 19 years old of 107 Sterling Street, Worcester and Keith Jones, 21 years old of 75 Gates Street, Worcester were placed under arrest and charged with Unlawfully Carrying a Firearm, Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Possession of Ammunition Without an FID, Possession of a Defaced Serial Number Firearm and Possession of a Sawed-Off Shotgun. All four were taken to the Worcester Police Detective Bureau and questioned. The men will be arraigned at the Worcester County District Courthouse on Friday, July 1, 2011.
