Worcester, MA (August 24, 2010) - On Monday, August 23, 2010 at approximately 8:45 PM Worcester Police responded to a motor vehicle accident which involved a bicycle carrying two youths. The Worcester Police Trafffic Division also responded to investigate this incident.
Upon the officers' arrival they observed two boys who were seriously injured. One boy, a passenger on the bike, is 15 years old and suffered a broken clavicle. The operator of the bike is 11 years old and he received an injury to his right arm, facial cuts and a laceration behind his left ear. Both boys were transported to UMass hospital (university campus) for treatment.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the boys were riding their bike south on Lodi Street. As they approached the intersection of Lafayette Street they had the stop sign but did not stop and proceeded into the eastbound travel lane of Lafayette Street. At that time a 1998 Ford Escort was being operated by a 21 year old Worcester resident. This vehicle was traveling east on Lafayette Street. The vehicle collided with the bike sending the youths to the ground. The bike was severely damaged and the vehicle sustained damage to the windshield and hood.
This investigation is ongoing and there have been no citations issued at this time. The vehicle was towed back to the police station for mechanical and safety inspections.
