Worcester, MA (October 11, 2017) - On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at approximately 11:50 AM, Worcester police responded to Merrifield Street for a report of an armed robbery of a taxi cab. Upon the officers arrival they met with the male victim. According to the victim, he was sitting in his cab while parked in the lot near Bell Pond. At this time, a male suspect approached him and asked the driver if he could be driven to a Merrifield Street address. The driver agreed. Once on Merrifield Street the suspect asked the driver to stop. At this time the suspect reached over from the back seat and placed his hands around the driver’s neck. The suspect then stuck a hard object up against the side of his head and demanded his money. The driver did not see the weapon but he was certain that it was a handgun. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash, the driver’s cell phone, and ignition key to the cab. The suspect then exited the cab and ran off. The suspect was last seen running down Merrifield Street and then turned right onto Elliot Street.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 6’0” tall, medium build, wearing a baseball cap, a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses.
Several police units responded and searched the area for the suspect. The search produced negative results.
The victim was unhurt during this incident.
WPD detectives and members of the Crime Scene Unit responded to the area. Investigators are now working on this case trying to identify the suspect.
