Worcester, MA (April 2, 2017) - On Sunday, April 2, 2017, A Worcester Police officer was working a private detail at the Riviera show club located at 241 Southbridge Street. At approximately 1:10 AM, the officer noticed a disturbance in the bar area. The officer went towards the bar to see what was going on. At this time the officer observed males arguing. Security staff was in the processing of separating the males when people started pointing towards a male stating that he was swinging a knife. The male, later identified as Miguel Martinez, 33-years-old of 108 Canterbury Street, Worcester, began to walk away when he noticed the officer approaching him.

The officer followed Mr. Martinez and ordered him to stop as he was walking through the front lobby. Mr. Martinez stopped and turned towards the officer. The officer noticed that Mr. Martinez was still holding the knife in his right hand. The officer ordered Mr. Martinez to drop the knife. Mr. Martinez ignored the officer and started to wave the knife at waist level as he began to walk backwards. At one point Mr. Martinez crouched down and charge towards the officer and a group of people that were behind him. The officer displayed his service weapon and ordered him to drop the knife once again. Mr. Martinez refused for the moment and continued to point the knife at employees and patrons. Mr. Martinez finally dropped the knife in the lobby and walked out the front door.

The knife was recovered under a table in the lobby.

The officer followed Mr. Martinez out into the parking lot. Mr. Martinez was observed running in between parked vehicles in the lot. The officer eventually apprehended Mr. Martinez as he was trying to crawl under a vehicle. The officer had to drag Mr. Martinez out from under the parked vehicle and placed in custody.
