On Wednesday, January 10, 2017, at approximately 11:35 PM, a Worcester Police officer working out of the Operations Division was on patrol on Hermon Street. At this time the officer observed a gray BMW 530 traveling directly in front of him. The BMW was traveling east on Hermon Street, approaching Southbridge Street. The operator failed to make a proper stop at this intersection. The officer observed the infraction and activated his emergency lights and signaled the operator to stop.
The officer approached the operator and identified him as Luis Olmo-Saavedra, 30-years-old of 9 Mott Street. The officer obtained the operator’s information and was walking back to his cruiser to check on the operator’s license status. At this time the officer heard the sound of something hitting the ground. The officer turned and observed a plastic baggie bouncing across the street. Upon seeing this the officer called for backup.
The officer was informed that Mr. Olmo-Saavedra was operating the BMW with a suspended license. With the assist of backup officers, the plastic baggie was retrieved and inspected. Officers observed that the baggie was filled with numerous smaller knotted baggies that contained heroin and Crack Cocaine. The packaging was consistent with drug distribution.
The two occupants of the BMW were asked to exit the vehicle. The passenger was identified as Rafael Miranda-Melendez, 42-years-old of 25 Queen Street.
Both men were placed under arrest. A search of Mr. Olmo-Saavedra produced $790 in cash and a wallet wrapped in Saran Wrap with a white powdery substance that appeared to be cocaine.
Mr. Olmo-Saavedra was charged with a Stop Sign Violation, Operating a MV with a Suspended License, Trafficking in Class B (Cocaine), Possession of Class A Substance with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of Class A Substance, Possession of Class B Substance (Cocaine) with the Intent to Distribute and Possession of Class B Substance.
Mr. Miranda-Melendez was charged with Possession of Class A Substance with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of Class A Substance, Possession of Class B Substance with the Intent to Distribute, and Possession of Class B Substance.
The cash and drugs were seized as evidence; the BMW was towed from the scene.
Both men were arraigned today at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
