On Saturday, February 3, 2018, at approximately 3:19 AM, Worcester Police responded to a serious car crash in the area of 523 Southbridge Street. Recon investigators were told by Operations officers that a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling south on Southbridge Street at a high rate of speed. The Chevrolet ended up striking a parked 2003 Audi station wagon that was in front of Safelite Auto glass located at 515 Southbridge Street. The force of the impact sent the parked Audi into the northbound lane while the Chevrolet ended up striking the Safelite Auto Glass building.
The crash scene was secured by Operations personnel and traffic rerouted onto alternate streets. Worcester Fire personnel and Worcester EMS arrived and treated the two male victims that were in the Chevrolet. The two occupants were stabilized at the scene and transported to a local hospital for treatment for serious injuries. Both males are in serious condition with head and chest trauma.
Recon officers observed a large hole in the Safelite building along with a knocked down aluminum street light pole that was across the southbound lane of Southbridge Street.
Code enforcement arrived at the scene and determined that the structural integrity of the building had been compromised and therefor structurally unsafe. The manager of the business arrived at the scene and began the process of securing the building.
Both vehicles received extensive damage and were towed from the scene. The Chevrolet was impounded and a full mechanical inspection will be conducted by recon investigators to see if any mechanical deficiencies may have contributed to the crash.
This investigation is ongoing. Recon investigators were unable at this time to speak with the driver and the passenger due to their medical condition and treatment. There have been no citations issued at this time but may change as the investigation moves forward.
