WPD Crash Reconstruction Unit Investigates Chandler St Pedestrian Accident

For Immediate Release: 5/8/2019 10:57 pm

On May 8th, 2019 at about 10 AM, Worcester Police officers were dispatched to a report of a pedestrian accident at 307 Chandler St. Officers observed a two damaged vehicles and two pedestrians, a small child in a stroller and her grandmother, who had been struck by one of the vehicles. Officers assisted the pedestrian victims, who were transported to the hospital by an ambulance. The Crash Reconstruction Unit was called and began their investigation.

The preliminary report found that a Toyota Prius was traveling westbound on Chandler St. It stopped at the crosswalk in front of Foley Stadium at 307 Chandler St to let the pedestrians pass, who were waiting at the crosswalk. A Chevy Malibu was traveling westbound on Chandler St and it struck the rear of the Prius. The Malibu then crossed the lane of oncoming traffic and struck the pedestrians, who were at the intersection of the sidewalk and the crosswalk. The Malibu continued and struck a pole, knocking it to the ground. The child and stroller were pulled under the Malibu, which was lifted up by witnesses, including DPW workers, so the child could be freed.

Two passengers from the Toyota Prius were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The grandmother and child suffered serious lower body injuries, including broken bones, but are in stable condition. Everyone involved has been questioned and the investigation is continuing.
