On Thursday, April 5, 2018, at approximately 12:19 AM, a Worcester Police officer was on patrol in the Main South area. At this time the officer was traveling south on Wellington Street behind a Blue Honda Fit. The officer observed that the Honda failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection of Main Street and Wellington Street. The driver of the Honda took a left onto Main Street. The officer activated his emergency lights and stopped the vehicle in front of 663 Main Street.
The officer approached the vehicle and had conversation with the operator. The operator provided the officer with a false name. After making several inquiries the officer was able to identify the operator’s real name as Paul Carroll, 37-years-old of 623 Shrewsbury Street, Holden.
The officer asked Mr. Carroll to step out of the vehicle. At this time Mr. Carroll swore at the officer and abruptly sped off nearly striking the officer and his backup officer. The officer’s quickly entered their cruisers and followed the Honda from a safe distance behind while calling out their direction of travel. The Honda eventually came to a stop in the parking lot of the registry of Motor Vehicles located at 611 Main Street.
The officer entered the lot and parked in front of the Honda. The officer observed Mr. Carroll throwing his hands up in the air in a sign of frustration. At this time Mr. Carroll placed the car back in gear and accelerated towards the officer and purposely rammed the fully marked police cruiser head on.
After the collision Mr. Carroll exited the Honda. At the same time the officer exited his cruiser and ordered Mr. Carroll to the ground. Mr. Carroll ignored all commands to get on the ground. Backup officers at the scene rushed towards Mr. Carroll and forced him to the ground. Mr. Carroll continued to resist arrest.
After a brief struggle with several officers Mr. Carroll was eventually subdued and secured in handcuffs.
The Honda received extensive damage and was towed from the scene; the police cruiser received minor damage and remained in operation.
Mr. Carroll was charged with a Stop Sign Violation, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Providing a False Name to a Police Officer, 2 Counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (car), Operating a MV so as to Endanger, Operating a MV with a Suspended License, Resisting Arrest and Malicious Destruction of Property over the Value of $250.00.
There were no injuries reported during this incident. Mr. Carroll was arraigned today at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
