For Immediate Release: 5/13/2019 10:42 am
On Saturday May 11th at about 1:45 AM, Worcester Police officers were dispatched to the area of Svea St for a report of gunshots. One of the responding officers saw a black Mercedes leaving the Svea St area at a high rate of speed. The officer followed the vehicle and ran the plate through the mobile CJIS system. The vehicle picked up speed and made a sharp right turn onto Esther St in an attempt to evade the police car. The officer activated the blue lights on his cruiser and stopped the vehicle on Henrietta St.
After the Mercedes stopped, the two males exited and ran through the back yard of an apartment complex toward Vernon St. The officer chased them, and noticed that one of the males, identified as Xavier Perez, twenty-years-old of 10 Lanesboro Rd, appeared to be holding something in his waistband as he ran. The males separated and the officer continued to pursue Mr. Perez. The foot pursuit went through several private residences and disturbed area residents. Eventually, the officer caught up with Mr. Perez and was able to take him into custody. The officers searched Mr. Perez and did not locate a firearm. The other male in the Mercedes has not been located.
Officers spoke with several witnesses, and determined that there was a party on Svea St. After a conflict broke out, there were gunshots and the owner of the black Mercedes had his keys stolen from him. The shots did not hit anyone.
Mr. Perez is charged with Unarmed Robbery, Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Disorderly Conduct, and Malicious Destruction of Property Under $1200. He will be arraigned in Worcester District Court.
