On Friday, February 2, 2018, members of the Neighborhood Response Team were set up during the afternoon in the Main South area. The NRT conducted surveillance in the 30 Chandler Street area, a known and problematic area for loitering and drug activity.
A supervisor for the NRT positioned himself from a distance and with a clear line of visibility to observe, with the aid of binoculars, several people that were in the area. This area is posted no trespassing.
The supervisor’s attention was soon drawn to a male, later identified as Brant Gauthier, 45-years-old of 155 Hammond Hill Road, Charlton.
Mr. Gauthier was seen conducting what appeared to be street level drug transactions in the area. After observing one of these transactions the supervisor decided to intercept the person walking away from Mr. Gauthier. After a safe distance had passed, and Mr. Gauthier was no longer in sight, the supervisor engage the person and inquired with what was observed.
After a brief conversation the person produced a piece of crack cocaine that was just purchased from Mr. Gauthier. As a result of the person cooperation, a summons to appear in court for the possession of Class B Substance was issued. The officer seized the contraband and after taking the persons personal information, was free to go.
With the supervisor now possessing the evidence, other NRT officers approached Mr. Gauthier in the area of 674 Main Street and placed him under arrest. Mr. Gauthier was charged with Trespassing (30 Chandler Street is posted) and Distribution of Class B Substance.
Mr. Gauthier will be arraigned on Monday, February 5, 2018 at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
