The Worcester Police Department seeks qualified applicants for the position of Building Custodian. The successful candidate will perform basic maintenance, cleaning services and minor repair tasks in public buildings and surrounding grounds in clean and orderly fashion and, as required, in operating low pressure boilers; following a standard of well-established procedures or prior instructions with review during process, or upon completion for conformance. Supervision received may range from close to moderately close depending upon the experience of the incumbent and the degree of variance from routine. Work may entail transportation of and installation of materials in the field to compliment police activities. Must be able to work any five days within a seven day work week, including various shifts as determined by the Police Department, including nights, weekends, holidays and/or on-call as the needs of the department require. Work locations may vary to include substations, out buildings, stables or other police owned/operated facilities. Reliable transportation and ability to travel to and from these various locations are required.

The qualified candidate will have the ability to operate small engine equipment such as lawnmowers, snow blowers, etc.; the ability to operate plows and sanders and other snow removal equipment; possess a valid and current Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license; working knowledge of methods, materials and equipment ordinarily employed in maintaining the clean and orderly condition of public buildings, grounds and equipment; knowledge of minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and fixtures in public buildings; knowledge of fire prevention and protection and of building hazards and safety precautions; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; ability to perform moderately heavy manual work; and pass a criminal history investigation and background check.


  • Completion of the high school or GED equivalent.
  • Experience in custodial work.
  • Other combinations of experience and training that provide the required knowledge, abilities and skills will be considered.
  • Possession of a valid and current Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license

SALARY: $15.90-$21.08, hourly, full-time
