The City of Worcester is offering an exciting opportunity to become a Police Cadet and is seeking service-minded, diverse, problem solvers with a desire to affect positive change within our community. We are seeking individuals with a serious commitment toward pursuing a career in law enforcement to apply for the full-time police cadet positions available.

A Police Cadet is considered a future leader in the community. With a two (2) year commitment in the Cadet Program, you will receive valuable hands on experience as well as an opportunity to make a positive impact on both your community and your career. The Police Cadet is a non-sworn position in a trainee capacity for preparation of a law enforcement and public service career. Under direct or general supervision, of sworn or civilian personnel, police cadets perform a wide variety of non-sworn duties in various divisions of the Police Department and performs related work as required. Police Cadet assignments are designed to familiarize you with the Department's organizational structure, functions, and the mission of its components while learning about community policing principles, techniques and methods.

This is not a Police Officer or a Police Officer training position. There is no guarantee of a sworn full-time Police Officer position with the Worcester Police Department. Police Cadets will be given the necessary hands on experience to increase the likelihood of success on Massachusetts Civil Service Police entrance exam with the ultimate goal of obtaining future employment with the Worcester Police Department.

Many cities and towns, including Boston and Springfield, benefit from Massachusetts statute MGL C 147 Section 21A. This statute allows cities and towns to hire Cadets and it’s a great gateway for candidates to join the department. Upon completion of the two (2) year program and successful passing of the entry level exam for Police Officer, a Cadet may receive preference and be appointed to a WPD recruit class.

Applicants are not expected to have prior experience, but are expected to have an interest in a career in law enforcement. Individuals from underrepresented populations, including people of color, women, and bilingual or multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
