PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT CLERK
AUDITING DEPARTMENT
CITY OF WORCESTER

The Auditing Department seeks applicants for the position of Principal Account Clerk. The Principal Account Clerk is responsible for the pre-audit of accounts payable invoices submitted for payment by City and School departments. Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Assistant, the Principal Account Clerk’s daily tasks include reviewing and approving invoices, recording approved invoices for payment, recording approved general journal entries, storing physical documents and converting to electronic archives, providing assistance as needed to department personnel and answering incoming phone calls.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience with data entry, file maintenance, and general administrative/clerical duties;
  • Prior accounting/bookkeeping experience, and strong math skills;
  • Knowledge and experience providing excellent customer service;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage priorities and multitask in a fast paced environment;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • Ability to resolve conflicts with vendors or city personnel while consistently maintaining a professional and courteous manner;
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations;
  • Ability to follow directions;
  • Ability to maintain daily logs;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to be a self-starter, conduct research, analyze and interpret data;
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including computers, scanners and copiers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of customer service and/or clerical experience in an office setting
  • One (1) year of experience performing accounting and/or bookkeeping functions
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in Business/Public Administration, Finance, Accounting or other related discipline
  • Working knowledge of municipal accounts payable procedures

SALARY RANGE: $18.06 - $23.93 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
