PRINCIPAL CLERK
VETERANS’ SERVICES DIVISION
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester seeks applicants for a part-time Principal Clerk position to provide general administrative support in the Veterans’ Services Division. The Principal Clerk is responsible for compiling, sorting, and filing hard-copy and electronic records; maintaining and updating files, inventory, mailings, and database systems; answering telephones, directing calls, and taking messages; communicating with customers, employees, and other individuals to answer questions, disseminate or explain information; and procuring paperwork as required by the State Department of Veterans Services. The employee may be required to participate in planning and conducting veteran-related events or ceremonies in the community such as Memorial and Veterans Day.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated computer proficiency and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Strong advocacy and mediation skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Proficient accounting and data processing skills;
  • Ability to maintain, manage, and organize records with sensitive/confidential information;
  • Ability to deal with members of the public, state and federal organizations in a courteous manner;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing clerical support in an office setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in Business/Public Administration, Human Services, or related discipline.
  • Prior experience working with veterans, service members and their families.

SALARY RANGE: $18.17 - $19.91 hourly, part-time (18 hours per week), non-benefitted.
