The City of Worcester’s Office of the Treasurer and Collector of Taxes seeks applicants for the position of Payroll Accountant. Reporting directly to the Manager of Taxation and Payroll, this position is responsible for executing key internal control procedures in a timely basis to assure that City receipts and disbursements are recorded timely, accurately and completely. This position requires competence with regard to payroll accounting to assure the timely, valid, accurate issuance of payroll and withholdings in accordance with State and Federal law. The Payroll Accountant assures that all transactions are processed in accordance with the Treasurer and Collector’s policies and procedures and must be promptly and accurately recorded in the City’s books and records.

The successful candidate will have prior professional work experience with reconciliations; demonstrated knowledge of standard accounting practices; will have demonstrated computer proficiency and will be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. The qualified candidate will possess strong analytical and organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail; strong verbal and written communication skills; strong collaborative skills; will have the ability to develop detailed understanding of City financial systems; the ability to work independently and with a team; the ability to consistently and reliably meet deadlines; the ability to collaborate and work with diverse populations, vendors, and staff; and the ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; OR,
• An Associate’s degree and five (5) or more years of related experience may be substituted for the above listed minimum requirement
• Knowledge of standard accounting procedures, principles, and practices
• Prior experience using Microsoft Office (Excel) to analyze and reconcile financial data

• Payroll experience
• Experience with cash and general ledger reconciliations and processes in a technical, integrated systems environment
• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP), or other accounting related certification

SALARY: $20.58 - $27.27 hourly, full-time, excellent benefits package.
