REGIONAL DISPATCHER I
CITY OF WORCESTER
The City of Worcester’s Department of Emergency Communications is seeking applicants for the position of Regional Dispatcher I. This position is responsible for receiving and transmitting information accurately and rapidly via communications equipment for Police, Fire and EMS. Under the direction of the Communications Director, the City operates a state-of the art emergency Communications Center. All Police, Fire, and 9-1-1 calls are received and dispatched from the Center. Public Safety Dispatchers report and work directly under a Shift Supervisor. Once trained and released from Trainee status, the Dispatcher is promoted to Regional Dispatcher II and has an opportunity to participate in collateral assignments. Further promotional opportunities to Trainer/CTO and Supervisor also exist.
Typical tasks of a Public Safety Dispatcher include: on an assigned shift, the Dispatcher operates a computer-aided-dispatch (CAD) system; answers telephone calls promptly and courteously; elicits complete information from callers and makes a rapid and accurate determination of the nature and priority of each call; selects and dispatches the most appropriate emergency response unit(s) in accordance with established user-agency policies and procedures; monitors safety of field personnel and dispatches assistance as required; performs other related duties and special projects as assigned by their supervisor. Applicants should have experience using computers. Bilingual/multicultural candidates encouraged to apply. All candidates must successfully complete and pass a typing test, and the agency’s “CritiCall” multitasking exam before appointment.
Special Certifications: All required training will be provided by the agency to those not already certified as such. After training, candidates must successfully obtain required certifications such as APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator and State 911 Dispatch certification.
• High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Candidates must have the ability to communicate in a clear, effective and calm manner via phone and radio and in writing.
• Ability to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, holidays. Overtime required.
STARTING SALARY: $19.31 - $23.70 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
