The City of Worcester’s Planning & Regulatory Services Division is seeking qualified applicants in the field of historic preservation planning to fill the position of Planning Analyst. This position will be responsible for staffing and administering the Worcester Historical Commission and programs related to historic preservation. Related duties include developing and administering policies and procedures for the protection of cultural and historical resources; ensuring compliance with historic preservation regulations; fulfillment of the city’s obligations and responsibilities as a Certified Local Government (CLG); and providing technical, architectural, design, historical, and policy guidelines to staff, governmental officials, boards and commissions, property owners, private development interests, and the general public. The Preservation Planner will also assist with planning and research in the areas of land use, zoning, and community development, as well as providing technical and administrative support to the city’s development boards and commissions.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge related to historic preservation and planning; willingness and ability to learn, work hard, think creatively and work collaboratively; strong organizational, interpersonal, written, oral communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills; Proficiency with personal computers, with a preference for experience using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); and customer service experience in an office setting (interacting with the public). This position requires the ability to staff evening meetings at least two times per month.


  • Bachelor’s degree in city or regional planning, architecture/landscape architecture, historic preservation, urban studies, geography, or other related discipline, PLUS
  • Two (2) years relevant experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in a related discipline may substitute for required experience


  • Familiarity with municipal historic preservation activities and programs, state and federal tax credit programs, Certified Local Government (CLG) requirements, and historic preservation best practices
  • Familiarity with the development review process
  • Experience with GIS mapping and analysis
  • Experience with web content development, Adobe Acrobat, desktop publishing software and/or and graphic design software

STARTING SALARY: $50,028.81 - $56,791.16, annually, full-time
