Geographic Information System (GIS)

With the addition of the Geographic Information System section, significant progress has been made to move the City's GIS program forward by taking advantage of the numerous opportunities available to City departments.

  • A City-wide GIS Needs Assessment was conducted and a GIS Implementation Plan was developed as a result of the assessment.
  • A GIS User Group, comprised of City GIS user departments, was formed to facilitate inter-departmental communication and project planning.
  • Data layers, such as buildings and streets, have been updated, replacing data that was several years old.
  • A Streets Centerline Data Layer Update Project was initiated to support a standardized address schema for the City. This project will address updates to street names, missing streets, one-way streets and public/private designations.
  • A GIS Intranet website was developed, and is used by City departments, as a centralized location to access all GIS-related data and applications.

In addition, significant improvements have been made to existing GIS applications and while new ones have been developed to meet the needs of GIS users such as Fire, Police, Assessing, Treasurer, Neighborhood Development, Economic Development, Public Works and Election Commission.
