Worcester Energy

Over the last 10+ years, Worcester has led by example by significantly improving the energy efficiency and dramatically increasing renewable energy production of its municipal facilities.

The EAM Division complements its work by managing a municipal Worcester Energy Initiative launched in 2016, which communicates to the public the important work the city has completed to date, and provides relevant information with a goal of encouraging residents, businesses and institutions throughout the city to save energy and reduce their carbon footprint.

A few notable accomplishments in the arena of energy efficiency and green energy include:

  • Having made critical investments in and improvements to the City's aging buildings, including upgrades to heating and cooling systems, insulation, air-sealing, lighting fixtures, water conservation equipment, installation of sophisticated energy management control systems and more.
  • Having installed solar panels at 10 Worcester Public Schools, including two solar parking canopies.
  • Having replaced 3,500 light bulbs in the DCU Center with LEDs.
  • Having replaced all of the City's 14,000 street lights with LEDs.
  • Worcester is home to the largest municipal solar farm in New England, off Route 146 on the site of the former Greenwood Street landfill.
  • The city is currently working on a multi-year project that will replace current lights with LEDs at approximately 90 municipally-owned buildings in the City, including all Worcester Public Schools!
