Utilities Disruptions

Prolonged power disruptions could have an impact on many areas of our lives including transportation, banking, delivery of food and other essentials, emergency services, health care, utilities, communications, government services, building operations and more. Preparing for an extended power outage is similar to general recommendations for any emergency situation. Our normal access to goods and services, even those as basic as water and power can be disrupted due to both natural and man-made causes. Most disruptions of energy services are on the order of minutes and hours rather than days or weeks; however widespread storms can leave those in rural areas cut off for days at a time. It is generally recommended that you be prepared for a minimum of 72 hours.

Worcester utility infrastructure is primarily owned and operated by the following:

Landline Telephone - Verizon Communications
Cable TV Franchise - Charter Communications
Electric (Delivery) - National Grid
Gas - Eversource

Residents and businesses also have the option of choosing from competing wireless telephone, satellite television and electricity suppliers.

Power Outages: Preparation & Restoration

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, practically odorless and tasteless gas or liquid and is very dangerous. This silent killer can go unnoticed until it is too late.

Sources of Carbon Monoxide include un-vented kerosene and gas space heaters, leaking chimneys and furnaces, back-drafting from furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves and fireplaces, gas stoves, generators and other gasoline powered equipment, automobile exhaust from attached garages and tobacco smoke. It is important to never run a generator and any other combustible engine in an enclosed space at any time. Review all of our Generator Safety Tips (14KB).
