A major component of the Emergency Management Wheel, preparedness encompasses a lot of the principles of readiness. It is through comprehensive and well thought out preparedness plans that you and your loved ones can remain safe before, during and after an emergency. Training and exercising your created plans and drills are all major components of the preparedness phase. During this phase, it is important to begin a discussion and ask questions to your family members regarding the emergency plans you have created. Among some of the concepts in becoming better prepared to recover from an emergency are presented in a variety of different ways. However, there are three simple actions you can take to greatly increase your preparedness almost immediately. By making an Emergency Supply Kit, as well as a Family Communications Plan (64KB), in addition to becoming more informed about emergencies and how to recover from them, you can greatly increase your preparedness levels.

Staying informed during emergencies, through media sources such as television and radio stations, may give you emergency information that may be critical for you and your loved ones. Also recommended for increased preparedness is registering for the City of Worcester's Emergency Alert Notification System, ALERTWorcester. Through ALERTWorcester, you will receive time sensitive notification that will keep you current in your preparedness and help maintain your safety.
