The following Frequently Asked Questions pertain to parking around the City of Worcester.

Q:
Are the City of Worcester parking lots and garages near the downtown and other areas of interest?
 A:

Yes. There are city-owned parking garages and parking lots in the downtown area and others parts of the City. There is a map depicting five minute walking circles around the parking garages with areas of interest throughout the map. Please visit our Municipal Lots & Garages page for parking facilities locations and areas of interest.

Q:
How much does it cost to park at a meter?
 A:

The current meter rate in the City of Worcester is $1.00 per hour, or $0.25 for every 15 minutes for the on-street parking meters. Off-street parking meters are $0.85 an hour.

Q:
If the posted sign limit is two hours, can I go back and "feed" the meter to obtain additional time?
 A:

No. The posted sign limits of 1hr and 2hrs are strictly enforced. The purpose of creating a time limit is to allow other motorists to find parking so that they can patronize local businesses. If you need longer-term parking there are 10 parking lots and 4 parking garages located throughout the City that charge affordable daily rates. Please see our Municipal Lots & Garages page for parking facilities locations and rates.

Q:
When are the meters and parking regulations enforced?
 A:

The parking meters are enforced from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Parking on Sunday and holidays are free of charge. The parking regulations are enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Q:
I always hear that it is difficult to find a parking spot in Worcester. How many parking spaces are there and where are they located?
 A:

Parking in Worcester is easier than you think and there is an abundance of spaces available. There are over 1200 metered spaces Downtown and throughout the City. There are also 4 City of Worcester visitor parking garages totaling 2800 spaces; and 10 City of Worcester parking lots totaling 580 parking spaces; all within walking distance of most areas of interest. A map and parking information of metered locations and parking facilities can be found on our Municipal Lots & Garages page.

Q:
What type of payment is accepted at the meters?
 A:

Most single-space parking meters accept all coins and credit cards. All paystations accept all coins, bills and credit cards.

Q:
When parking at a meter, how do I know which meter goes to what parking space?
 A:

When parking at a meter, the meter that is closest to the front of the vehicle belongs to that parking space. To ensure that you receive credit for paying for a parking space, always remember to pull the front of your vehicle as close as possible to the meter pole so that they are parallel. There are some locations where there are double headed meters. In those situations one meter will be at the rear of the vehicle.

Q:
If a meter is not functioning, who should I contact and will I receive a citation for parking there?
 A:

If a single space meter is not functioning properly, you can report this to the City of Worcester's Customer Service Center at (508) 929-1300 or by filling out the information on our Online Customer Service Center.

Repairs to meters are made daily. If the meter is not functioning, you can still park at the location, but the posted time limits are still enforced. For example, if the meter you are parked at is a 1 hour meter, you will only be able to park at that location for 1 hour at no charge. You will receive a citation if you overstay the time limit.

If a paystation is not functioning properly and there is another nearby, simply go to the nearest paystation to pay for parking. Paystations are a pay-by-space number operation. Just like a single-space meter, you can report a paystation that is not functioning to the City of Worcester's Customer Service Center at (508) 929-1300 or by filling out the information on our Online Customer Service Center.

Q:
What is the fine for overstaying my time at the parking meter or at a regulated parking space?
 A:

The fine for parking at an expired meter or for overstaying the time at a paystation/regulated parking spot is $15.00. Payment must be made within 21 days, as fines will double if not paid within the specified timeframe. If you feel that the citation was given to you erroneously you can always appeal the citation by following the procedures on the back of the citation.

Q:
Who can park in the parking garages?
 A:

Anyone may park in any of the four garages and pay the hourly rate. Monthly parking permits are available. Contact the garage operator at (508) 799-1535 for more information.

Q:
What happens if, for some reason, I lose the garage ticket?
 A:

You will be assessed a $15 parking fee.
