Public Works & Parks - Water/Sewer Operations

The Water/Sewer Operations Division is an Enterprise operation responsible for the supply and conveyance of potable water and for the collection and conveyance of all sanitary sewage and storm-water throughout the City of Worcester. This division provides an average of 24 million gallons per day for both in-city use and sale to towns and water districts adjacent to Worcester. The supply system consists of 10 reservoirs located in five neighboring towns. Worcester's complex distribution system includes over 592 miles of water mains ranging in size from 3/4 to 54-inch diameter pipes, 6,100 fire hydrants and nearly 40,000 service connections. Emergency response to system failures is provided 24 hours a day throughout the year.

In addition, the sanitary, combined storm-water systems are made-up of approximately 750 miles of various sized mains, twenty-eight sewage-pumping stations and a Combined Sewage Overflow Treatment Facility. Over 150 miles of sewers were constructed before the year 1900!

This Division is also responsible for catch basin cleaning, sewage pumping station maintenance, inspection and diagnosis of sewer systems, general infrastructure maintenance, easement clearing and flood control (including street drainage). Water/Sewer Operations is funded entirely from revenues provided through a user fee. Rate recommendation is done after very careful review of the Enterprise budget and its operations.
