The Future of Worcester Regional Airport

With a commitment to ensuring the future of Worcester Regional Airport, the City Manager secured the services of Infrastructure Management Group (IMG) which conducted a review of the potential for new commercial air service and the financial implications of various operating and governance options. The report from the consultant was forwarded to the City Manager, the Airport Commission and City Council. This document is consistently referred to as the city and Massport discuss future operations at the Airport.

IMG also has, and will continue to assist in the implementation of a $2 million Department of Transportation Marketing Grant. Specific airline recruitment packages have been prepared and presented to numerous airlines over the course of the past three years. That effort continues at each opportunity to meet with commercial carriers. Goals for the Grant are specified to "recruit and retain low-cost, reliable jet service" to destinations identified in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and our own passenger surveys.

The city and Massport also worked with Jacobs Consultancy on the development of a long-awaited Master Plan for the 1,300 acres that constitute the Airport facilities. The plan was sponsored by the FAA and the Massachusetts Aeronautics Administration (MAC) and was reviewed by both agencies and forwarded along to the city for public release.

Additionally, the airport was one of ten air carrier airports that participated in The New England Regional Airport System Plan, a study funded and managed by the FAA. The report looked at the utilization of commercial activity and how it would impact the eleven regional airports over the next twenty years.
