Contractor/Trade Permits

Any person working without proper permits or licenses shall be subject to a fine of $500.00 for residential properties or $1000.00 for commercial properties. In addition to the proper permit or license fee. Subsequent offenses are subject to a second $500.00 or $1000.00 fine or a fine equal to double the original permit fees whichever is greater. All fines are subject to review by the Commissioner of Inspectional Services.

Permit/License Types

We encourage you to submit your application ONLINE through our permit portal links below! Please complete all required fields, electronically sign and upload the appropriate documents.

Before you can submit an application for a permit or license you must create an account. Please see Signing Up, Creating a Profile & Accessing Your Information and Applying for a Permit & Paying Fees.

Your tradesperson license, along with a copy of your Workers Compensation Insurance documentation must be on file with the Department of Inspectional Services and/or attached to a submitted application for a permit.

All work to be performed in accordance with the Massachusetts Electrical Code (MEC), 527 CMR 12.00.

Please Note: In an effort to support the department's initiative to go paperless, there will be a $50 Administrative Fee added to all permit and license applications that are submitted over the counter or by mail effective January 1, 2022. We encourage you to take advantage of the online permitting & license portal links above where you can apply for all permits/licenses without an added Administrative Fee.

You may also mail your application to the Building/Zoning Division, however we recommend you follow up to ensure that it was received and that only copies of the original documents are mailed.
