“On behalf of the City of Worcester Administration, I extend my sincere condolences to Brian’s family and friends on his passing this morning. Brian was a dedicated public servant who served on the Worcester School Committee for more than 35 years. It was an honor for me to serve alongside Brian on the School Committee at the beginning of my career. His lifelong passion for education and commitment to our students, teachers and administrators will surely be missed.”
-City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr.
"On behalf of the School Committee, City Council, Superintendent Binienda, City Manager Augustus, and the entire City of Worcester family, I am sorry to announce that School Committee member Brian O’Connell passed this morning.
A lifelong resident of our city, Brian was born and raised in Worcester, growing up on the grounds of Worcester Academy where his parents worked on the staff. After graduating his beloved College of the Holy Cross and Harvard University Law School, Brian pursued a distinguished legal career before dedicating himself entirely to the field of education. For the last twenty years he worked as a public school administrator in several local communities.
First elected to the Worcester School Committee on November 3rd, 1983, Brian was the longest serving member of the Worcester School Committee and one of the longest, continually elected officials in our city’s history.
Brian possessed a truly brilliant mind and dedicated his life and energies to education. For those of us who are honored to serve with him, Brian was always prepared, always thorough, and always polite.
Brian was not just a colleague but a friend. His talents will be missed."
