Residents Cautioned to Avoid Lake Quinsigamond After Pump Station Overflow

For Immediate Release: 2/26/2016 3:51 pm

Worcester, MA (February 26, 2016) - The City of Worcester Department of Inspectional Services Housing and Health Inspections Division in conjunction with both the City of Worcester Division of Public Health and the Town of Shrewsbury Board of Health have issued a public health advisory, urging people to avoid contact with water at Lake Quinsigamond until further notice.

The repair of a 30-inch sewer main break at Shrewsbury and Belmont streets Thursday caused flooding and the pump station to overflow an unknown quality of sewage into the lake late Thursday and early Friday.

Residents are advised to avoid contact with all surface waters. Pets should also be kept from the water. The water will be continuously tested, and a further update will be provided when there is no longer a threat to the public health.
