Dr. Morse Dedication, WOO Moves Kick Off to be Held August 27th

For Immediate Release: 8/21/2015 11:44 am

Worcester, MA (August 21, 2015) - Dr. Leonard Morse, former Commissioner of the Worcester Division of Public Health, dedicated his career to improving the health of the Worcester community. His 50 years of service to the City of Worcester will be celebrated with the dedication of the new Morse Stroll, a commemorative walking path surrounding Elm Park, on Thursday, August 27, 2015.

The Morse Stroll dedication will be held in conjunction with the kick-off of WOO Moves, a physical fitness program designed to keep the community active with designated walking routes throughout the City.

WOO Moves Kick-Off: 4:00 PM on the Worcester Common along Front Street
Morse Stroll: 4:30 PM at Elm Park, corner of Elm and Russell Streets

WOO Moves is an extension of Dr. Morse's efforts to improve the health of the Worcester community. After a brief speaking program, attendees will walk one of the new WOO Moves routes from the Common to Elm Park (about one mile).

At Elm Park, a paved walkway around the perimeter of park will be dedicated to Dr. Morse.

Dr. Morse officially retired in 2011 after serving for nine years as Worcester's Public Health Commissioner. Prior to his role as public health chief, Dr. Morse worked as a physician consultant and medical epidemiologist where he worked in affiliation with the Division of Public Health.

Dr. Morse is respected as one of the most influential members of the Massachusetts medical community, having served as a president of both the Worcester District Medical Society and its parent organization, the Massachusetts Medical Society.

WOO Moves, an extension of the City's employee wellness program, currently consists of four walking routes with progress markers along the way. Participants can use a smartphone to scan the QR code on each marker to access fun facts about exercise, architecture and points of interest related to the particular route.

WOO Moves is funded by Mass in Motion, the Worcester Division of Public Health's program that promotes healthy, active living in all aspects of life.
