The Neighborhood Summer Parks Stewards Program strategy was introduced in July 2010 as a partnership linking neighborhood teens with neighborhood-based jobs. Maintenance activities performed by the youth in City Parks involve activities such as; trash-pick-up, tree planting, graffiti removal, park maintenance, landscaping, trail maintenance, painting, brush removal and other related assigned projects.
This year’s program focused on the following locations: University Park, Hadwen Park, East Park, Bell Hill Pond, Newton Hill and Castle Park (in addition to a mobile maintenance crew). Last year the program employed 42 maintenance workers and this year that number has grown to 57 positions. The program is funded through the City of Worcester and a grant from Massport.
