Valuing and Managing Worcester's Urban Forests:
Presentation by Dr. Robert Krueger, WPI Assistant Professor of Geography, Director of the Worcester Community Project Center and Director of the Environmental Studies Program.
The Asian Long-horned Beetle crisis in Worcester has brought into sharp focus to the multiple values urban trees bring to the city and its residents. WPI research teams in conjunction with the City of Worcester, the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Worcester Tree Initiative have been working to assess the economic and environmental value of trees removed in the Burncoat/Greendale neighborhoods (to April 2009). In addition, WPI researchers have been collaborating with these organizations to develop resource management tools for tree stewardship. Both of these activities will support educational opportunities for Worcester residents in the planning and management of these valuable resources.
Request City Manager request Dr. Robert Krueger, WPI, to provide the administration with the listing of the preferred tree species recommended by students for the Worcester re-planting effort as the best for eco-benefits.
Request City Manager provide the City Council with an impact statement how the March, 2010 rainstorms more severely impacted the city's drainage systems due to the fact that many areas of the Burncoat and Greendale neighborhoods have been stripped of tree cover and their root systems.
Presentation by John Foisy, Finance & Marketing Department Head and Sheila Harrity, Principal, Worcester Technical High School in recognition of students winning awards from the Massachusetts Association of Marketing Students 2010 statewide competition:
Josh Patnod and Brittany Zigmont for the Financial Literacy and Promotions Project
Jennifer Siqueira for Applications and Account Marketing
Referred to be first item at the March 31, 2010 City Coucil meeting
